36-Child Daycare and 81-Units of Affordable Rentals Get Underway on Goldstream Avenue
The second phase of Pacific Housing’s Oak Park community along the 600-block of Goldstream Avenue in Langford is now under construction.
The 81-suite affordable rental complex with a ground floor daycare component will rise to a height of four-storeys and join the project’s first phase (completed in 2018) of 73 homes across four levels.
“We’re delighted to be back on the site so soon after finishing the first phase of the Oak Park project,” said Lauren Antifeau, development manager of TL Housing Solutions, Oak Park’s development partner. “Things ran smoothly through the municipal permitting and BC Housing review processes, and we have the City of Langford and BC Housing staff to thank for that.”
As part of a cooperative effort between Pacifica Housing, TL Housing Solutions, BC Housing and the City of Langford, Oak Park is a redevelopment of a small cluster of townhomes operated by Pacific Housing. Residents were given the first opportunity to transition to Oak Park, building 1 upon that building’s completion last year. Once construction finalizes on building 2 the site’s overall density will have increased by some 125 homes to a total of 154.
Oak Park’s daycare will accommodate 12 toddlers and 24 children up to the age of five with availability to both residents of Oak Park and the greater community.
“We know this daycare will add a very important service to Oak Park residents and the surrounding community.” Antifeau says. “Daycares, particularly those run by non-profit operators, enable local parents to search for employment opportunities that they may not have had the opportunity to look for otherwise.”
A non-profit operator has yet to be named.
TL Housing Solutions and Pacific Housing recently completed another Westshore affordable housing project on Sooke Road across from the entrance to Royal Roads University.
The 82-unit Helios building at 2006 Sooke Road welcome tenants earlier this year and also represents a significant density uplift on land formerly occupied by townhomes.
