Director of Engineering & Public Works
Would you like to be part of a dynamic, fast paced, award winning local government organization? A team that prides itself on providing cost effective local government services for local residents? Do you have the right attitude, qualifications, and superior people skills for the job?
The City of Langford invites you to apply to be our next Director of Engineering & Public Works! This position is available due to an upcoming retirement and is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced leader to join our exceptional senior management team.
What’s the position?
As a pivotal member of our senior management team, you will provide leadership to Engineering services through mentorship and support of staff development, policy and bylaw development, and strategic planning. You will act as the main representative and spokesperson on matters related to Engineering when dealing with Council, Committees, and the general public. And don’t worry, you’ll still get a chance to get your hands dirty as you manage and oversee complex Capital projects!
You will lead a team of 18 (including yourself!), that consists of two fantastic Deputy Directors, a strong team of Engineering Technologists, and a small but mighty team of Beautification Workers. Our business model is to contract out most maintenance and public works, so you will also work collaboratively with many of our long-standing partners and contractors.
Who are we looking for?
As our ideal candidate, you are comfortable with a busy schedule of competing priorities, you are politically adept and a strong communicator, and you have a sense of humour with the ability to take your work seriously but not yourself!
- Registration in good standing with EGBC, preferably as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), and 10 years’ experience in senior project management and/or management of civil infrastructure (or an equivalent combination)
- Strong leadership and relationship building skills with the demonstrated ability to lead a team
- The ability to speak in public and address public concerns orally and in writing
- Extensive knowledge of infrastructure systems and the principles and practices involved in the administration and operation of municipal engineering and public works
- Thorough knowledge of municipal bylaws and engineering specifications pertaining to municipal infrastructure
- Valid BC Drivers Licence
