CITY OF LANGFORD SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT FOR VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK EXPANSION PROJECT

CITY OF LANGFORD SEEKS COMMUNITY INPUT FOR VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK EXPANSION PROJECT

(Langford, B.C.) – The City of Langford invites community members to participate in a survey aimed at gathering input to shape the expansion of the City’s Veterans Memorial Park. The survey is available on LetsChatLangford.ca until August 17, 2025.

Community members are also invited to provide their feedback in person by visiting the City pop-up booths at the Goldstream Farmers Market on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at Fridays at the Station on Friday, August 15, from 5 p.m. to dusk.

“Veterans Memorial Park is a significant landmark in Langford and plays a vital role in shaping the city’s identity,” said Scott Goodmanson, Mayor of Langford. “Your participation in this engagement will ensure that the expanded park aligns with community needs as the city continues to grow.”

Earlier this year, the City of Langford conducted its first round of engagement for the Parks and Trails Master Plan, identifying potential amenities for the park expansion. Furthermore, a Parks, Trails, and Recreation Needs Assessment conducted in 2023 highlighted the community’s current and future needs regarding parks, natural spaces, trails, and recreation. With these potential amenities identified, the City is seeking community input to refine the design for the park’s expansion.

Veterans Memorial Park, which currently covers 1.75 acres, is Langford’s central location for festivals and events, including the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony, Langford Light Up, and the popular Goldstream Farmers Market. The park features a cenotaph that serves as a memorial to those Canadian Forces members who lost their lives in service. Additionally, the park offers amenities such as a playground, a spray park, a basketball court, a covered gazebo, washroom, a water fountain, and garden beds, all of which contribute to its popularity within the community. In response to the growing demand for greenspace, the City acquired approximately 1.35 acres of adjacent land in 2022, bringing the total size of the park to over three acres.

The park expansion will create additional space for public markets and events. Preservation of mature trees is a priority in the expansion, including the iconic sequoia tree that serves as the focus of the city’s annual holiday light display. The project, funded through development contributions, will come at no additional cost to taxpayers.

The City of Langford will review the survey responses and begin designing the park in the Fall of 2025, with construction expected to begin early 2026.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the survey and provide their input at the two planned pop-up events to help shape the future of Veterans Memorial Park.
