Langford Council Adopts Good Neighbour Policy and Community Standards Bylaw to Support Livable Neighbourhoods and Responsible Growth
(Langford, B.C.): At the May 19, 2026, meeting, Langford Council adopted a Good Neighbour Policy and Community Standards Bylaw to make it easier for residents, businesses, developers, and builders to understand the expectations that support a livable community. Together, these updates are designed to improve day-to-day quality of life for residents, reducing frustration, improving neighbourhood conditions, and setting clear expectations, while supporting sustainable growth and development across the city.
“Council heard clearly from residents that as our community grows, we need to do a better job managing everyday impacts like noise and dust,” said Scott Goodmanson, Mayor of Langford. “This bylaw and policy strike that balance, supporting growth while making sure we’re being mindful of the people around us and protecting the quality-of-life people expect in Langford.”
The Good Neighbour Policy provides guidelines for best practices and common courtesies that developers and builders can use to build good relationships with neighbours. This policy requires a declaration to be signed which acknowledges that developers and builders have read and understand the policy and commit to following it to their best abilities.
The Community Standards Bylaw brings together regulations for issues like noise, property maintenance, nuisances, and construction impacts into one clear, modern framework with consistent language. It also introduces new rules for unoccupied properties, boulevard upkeep, dust control, and managing the impact of construction.
Informed by extensive public engagement, the new Good Neighbour Policy and Community Standards Bylaw are designed to support more livable neighbourhoods adjacent to construction, while strengthening the City’s ability to educate, enforce, and resolve issues in a fair and balanced way. Other communities in B.C. with a Good Neighbour Policy include Coquitlam, Abbotsford, and the District of North Vancouver.
