Job Description:

Reporting to the Deputy Fire Chief of Operations, the Assistant Fire Chief of Training is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of the firefighter training programs. Along with leading and managing department training initiatives, this role will use data and performance metrics to evaluate and report on training program effectiveness and operational readiness. As an integral member of the management team, the Assistant Fire Chief of Training ensures training programs are current, effective, and aligned and with other Westshore Fire Departments, with a focus on firefighter safety.

As the Assistant Chief of Training, you will act as a liaison with external agencies, regulatory bodies, and regional partners by representing the department on training initiatives, committees, and interagency programs. This role will also provide operational and tactical support to fire department personnel by responding to fires and other emergencies, as well as participate in on-call Chief Officer Duty coverage on a rotational basis.

 

Qualifications for this position include:

  • Post‑secondary diploma in Administration, Leadership, or a related field, along with seven (7) years of progressive experience in the Fire Service, including three (3) years’ leadership experience (or an equivalent combination)

Required Certifications:

  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer III Certification*
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor II
  • EMA FR Level 3 Valid License

*Candidates who do not currently possess the NFPA 1021 Fire Officer III certification may be considered, provided they have NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II Certification and level III is obtained after hire.

  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers’ Licence
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, procedures and techniques of emergency responses including fire suppression, hazardous materials, technical rescue, auto extrication and medical aid
  • Ability to clearly define expectations, analyze performance, recommend improvements and follow through on improving skills and abilities
  • Ability to initiate change in the policies and practices and programs which work toward improving the operational capacity of the department and to use creativity and innovation to identify new opportunities, ideas or solutions
  • Thorough knowledge of fire department operational guidelines, regulations, standing orders, policies and applicable Municipal and Provincial Codes, Acts and Bylaws
  • Demonstrated senior-level experience in emergency scene management and incident command, with proven command-and-control capability in complex and high-risk operational environments
  • Ability to collaborate positively with other Chief Officers from other organizations, union members, and international accrediting bodies

 

The salary range for this regular full-time position is $161,710.25 to $179,678.05 annually (2026 rates), plus an excellent benefits package including one of Canada’s top pension plans. Please refer to the job description for more information and a detailed position description.
