Langford, B.C. – The City of Langford has been recognized as the #2 city in British Columbia for Economic Resiliency by BC Business Magazine. Langford is ranked just behind Sidney and ahead of Central Saanich on a list of the top 50 cities in terms of economic resilience.
The ranking was calculated by reviewing municipalities in B.C. with at least 10,000 residents and assessed using criteria such as population growth, job creation, and real estate activity. The ranking also evaluated data on economic diversity, household financial vulnerability, and residents’ sense of belonging before assigning a score to each city.
Langford’s focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and community engagement has played a pivotal role in achieving this accolade. Langford’s personalized, grassroots approach to economic development has contributed to its success including support for local businesses, encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, a commitment to community engagement, and supporting diverse economic activities. The city’s economy spans various sectors including technology, retail, manufacturing, hospitality, and creative industries, contributing to a balanced and resilient economic structure. These aspects were significant during the global pandemic when Langford’s economy adapted and performed well amid unpredictable conditions.
In keeping with a focus on economic development, in 2023 Council approved Langford’s first Strategic Plan, which identifies economic development as a key priority area. As part of this, the City is working on its first formal Economic Development Strategy, which will launch this June and be completed by early 2026.
