Free Yard Waste Drop-Off This March to Support Wildfire Resiliency in Langford
(Langford, B.C.): The City of Langford and Langford Fire Rescue, with the continued support of Intact Insurance, are pleased to announce the return of a FREE pop-up yard waste drop-off service this March. The service will provide residents with an easy and effective way to reduce wildfire risk around their homes and strengthen community resiliency.
Pop-Up Yard Waste Drop-Off Details
The pop-up yard waste drop-off site, located at 2955 Sooke Lake Road, will be open over three Saturdays in March:
- Saturday, March 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Saturday, March 14 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
- Saturday, March 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Accepted materials include pruned or fallen branches, dead plant material, and invasive species such as broom, blackberry bushes, and ivy. Household garbage, construction debris (including lumber), and other non‑vegetative materials will not be accepted. To ensure safe and efficient operations, residents are asked to separate chippable vegetation, such as branches and shrubs from invasive and non‑chippable materials, including bulk pine needles, leaves, grass clippings, roots, and dirt.
The City reminds residents that proof of Langford residency is required upon entry. Acceptable proof includes identification showing a Langford address.
“The strong community response to this initiative last year reinforced the value of providing accessible, practical tools that help residents take meaningful action to protect their homes and neighbourhoods from wildfire,” said Scott Goodmanson, Mayor of Langford. “By working together to reduce wildfire risk, we are strengthening Langford’s resilience and helping to protect our community today and into the future.”
The March 2026 yard waste drop‑off follows the initial program launched in November 2025, which saw nearly 450 residents participate and approximately 135 tonnes (360 cubic yards) of hazardous vegetation removed over three weekends. This is the City’s second pop‑up yard waste drop‑off service funded through the Intact Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant Program, a $200,000, two‑year grant supporting vegetation management, FireSmart education, and community‑led initiatives to reduce wildfire risk across Langford.
“We are pleased with the strong participation in our initial yard waste drop-off events held in November and commend the community for their collective efforts,” stated Assistant Chief Simon Chadwick of Langford Fire Rescue. “By proactively managing their properties, residents are also contributing to the reduction of wildfire risk throughout the community.”
The yard waste drop-off initiative is a key initiative of the City’s Wildfire Mitigation Program, guided by Langford’s Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan. The program focuses on proactive fuel management, FireSmart education, and collaboration between residents, emergency services, and community partners to better prepare for wildfire threats.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the three drop-off dates in March as part of their spring yard clean-up and to learn more about FireSmart practices that can help make properties more resilient year-round.
