More than 40 acres of trails, greenspace, and lakefront parkland will remain protected and publicly accessible in perpetuity.
(Langford, B.C.): In a major win for outdoor recreation, conservation, and community access, the City of Langford has secured permanent public access to some of the community’s most well-loved natural spaces at the Gravity Zone & Nature Trails and Lakepoint Park. Through agreements with Westhills Land Corp., approximately 40 acres of land at the Gravity Zone & Nature Trails and three acres of lakefront property at Lakepoint Park will be dedicated as public parkland, ensuring these valued recreation areas remain accessible, protected, and off-limits to future development.
The dedication directly advances Council’s strategic priorities in Langford’s first Parks and Trails Master Plan and represents a significant expansion of the City’s growing parks and trails network.
“This parkland dedication is a lasting investment in Langford’s future,” said Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson. “As the community continues to grow, protecting these lands means residents will continue to have equitable and accessible opportunities to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor recreation, and experience the natural beauty that that surrounds us.”
Lakepoint Park adds three acres of lakefront parkland to the public inventory, creating lasting access to Langford Lake, a swimming platform, and a connecting section of the Ed Nixon Trail. The site also contains critical habitat for the endangered Western Painted Turtle. Considerable ecological design and habitat enhancement efforts were undertaken to create and protect nesting and basking areas, improving habitat quality while mitigating impacts associated with human use and predator access.
As part of rezoning requirements, Westhills constructed several park amenities, including:
- An accessible floating pier
- Picnic tables and seating
- Garbage receptacles and bike racks
- Improved lake access
At the Gravity Zone & Nature Trails, the City has secured a well-known hiking and mountain biking destination, along with surrounding natural lands. The trail system features routes for a range of skill levels, dramatic viewpoints, and forested paths beneath mature tree canopies, making it one of Langford’s signature outdoor recreation areas.
“We are thrilled to see more than 40 acres of land, including key areas around Langford Lake, the Gravity Zone & Nature Trails, and Parkdale Creek, become part of the City’s public park inventory,” said Kyle Taylor, Westhills Land Corp. representative. “This transfer represents another meaningful step in Westhills’ long-term commitment to building a complete community that is connected to nature, recreation, and public open space. Residents have enjoyed these lands for years, and we are proud to help ensure they remain accessible, protected, and valued into the future.”
With this latest dedication, Westhills has now transferred more than 100 acres of parkland and public open space to the City of Langford, including playgrounds, neighbourhood parks, trails, wetlands, outdoor recreational amenities, and environmentally significant natural areas.
Securing both parkland acquisitions supports Council’s commitment to balancing growth and environmental stewardship, expanding recreation options, and preserving access to nature, as outlined in Langford’s Parks and Trails Master Plan. With these lands now protected, the City has ensured that residents can continue to access these valuable recreation assets in perpetuity.
