Langford Celebrates The Grand Re-Opening Of Veterans Memorial Park

The City’s largest and most prominent destination park has nearly doubled in size.

(Langford, B.C.): On September 24, the City of Langford celebrated the significant expansion and grand re-opening of Veterans Memorial Park. Langford’s iconic central gathering space has nearly doubled in size, providing space for residents and visitors alike to gather and create lasting memories. Shaped by input from the community, the expanded park now boasts over 3 acres of dedicated parkland, featuring looped pathways, a bandshell and performance lawn, accessible picnic areas, enhanced washroom facilities, modern street furniture, and upcoming increased parking. The park expansion was 100% funded by Parkland Acquisition and Improvement Development Cost Charges, at no cost to the taxpayer.

Already a favourite place for community events and celebrations, the park will now have more room to accommodate future activities in Langford’s growing community. Beloved community events such as the annual Langford Light Up, Remembrance Day, Music in the Park, and the Goldstream Farmers Market will now have more space and key upgrades including a purpose-built bandshell made with B.C. mass timber by Kinsol Timber Systems Ltd.

In August 2025, the City engaged with the community to learn about their priorities and vision for the expansion of Veterans Memorial Park. Community feedback highlighted the need for enhanced washroom facilities, performance space, and open areas to relax, which was incorporated into the park expansion.

“As a growing city, we often hear from the community that we need more spaces to gather outside,” said Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson. “Veterans Memorial Park sits right in the heart of our community, and the expanded space brings an opportunity for residents to gather, celebrate, and enjoy the outdoors right in their backyard.”

The park expansion was made possible through agreements to relocate both the West Shore Masonic Lodge and West Shore Chamber of Commerce. In 2022, the City of Langford purchased approximately 1.35 acres of adjacent land located at 679 Goldstream Ave, 2815 Aldwynd Road, and 678/680 Fairway Avenue from the West Shore Masonic Lodge to facilitate the expansion. The land purchased from the Masons remains the home to the beloved sequoia tree which serves as the primary focus of the annual Langford Light Up Celebration. In 2026, the City found a new space for the West Shore Chamber of Commerce to facilitate the construction of expanded parking for park visitors.

“After 70 years at this location, the Goldstream Masonic Lodge #161 relocated to its new Bryn Maur location with the assistance of the City of Langford to facilitate this park expansion,” said David Cronkhite from the Goldstream Masonic Lodge. “The Goldstream Masonic Lodge congratulates the City of Langford on the creation of this much needed asset and takes pride in assisting in this achievement for the enjoyment of Langford residents.”

Veterans Memorial Park was originally established on September 19, 2001, and to this day remains a tribute to Veterans of wars past and the armed forces who continue to serve Canada. Thanks to Victoria Contracting and Municipal Maintenance Company, a Veterans Crosswalk has been installed in-kind on Fairway Avenue in honour of those who have served. The crosswalk features the same design recently installed in Sooke, and the City of Langford extends its appreciation to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54 (Sooke) and the District of Sooke for allowing the use of the design.

“Spaces like Veterans Memorial Park continue the legacy of our veterans and help us honour those who have served our country,” said Norm Scott, President of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 91. “They provide an opportunity for residents of all ages to gather and learn about the sacrifices made in service to Canada and to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy today.”

The park expansion directly addresses multiple objectives set by the City’s first Parks and Trails Master Plan, including expanding and diversifying unstructured recreation amenities, increasing accessible recreation options, and elevating placemaking opportunities. The expansion also preserves mature Garry oak and Douglas fir trees while enhancing biodiversity and expanding the urban tree canopy in the downtown core.

As Langford continues to grow, the expanded Veterans Memorial Park provides a vibrant and inclusive space where residents can gather, celebrate local culture, enjoy nature, and build community in the heart of the city.
